Out of the Northwest, The
Hartnet Gallery, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, 1991 The poster on the right was made for Out of the Northwest, featuring a photograph by each of the artists. I consider this show one of the best contexts for this body of work, bridging the gap between the informational document, and the aesthetic practice of photography. Darius Kinsey documented logging operations at the turn of the century, with a large-format camera. I looked at his photographs at the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, Washington, and felt a strong kinship with him. He was the modernist of the 'logging document', and I am the post-modernist (too self-conscious for my own good). As for Frank Gohlke, it was also a great honour to show alongside his work.
